Heart Beat Records

Heart Beat Records, formed in 1980, is an independent International Record and Video company concentrating on quality releases for and from the Catholic market and founded by a family of Irish-American Catholics. HeartBeat Records was the first recording company in the USA to bring contemporary Christian music to people within the Catholic faith.
On Saturday October 1, 1994 HeartBeat moved into its new offices in Donnellson, Iowa. HeartBeat celebrated its 10th anniversary in their new offices (24 years in business) in October, 2004.
Some of the artists that are on or were associated with the Heart Beat label:
* Susanna (Susan Stein, co-founder of Heart Beat Records),
* Gerry Brown (brother of Susan Stein and brother-in-law of Ronald Stein),
* Dana Scallon, (sister to Susan Stein and Gerry Brown as well as sister-in-law to company co-founder Ronald Stein),
* Kara Klein,
* Phillip K.(Phillip Stein, founding member and president of the United Catholic Music and Video Association and son of Heart Beat founder Ronald Stein)
In the year 2000, Heart Beat Records and family members formed a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization for the purpose of celebrating Catholic music recordings and videos. Phillip Stein, brother and brother-in-law of Heart Beat founders Ronald and Susan Stein was the first president of the association. The organization was called the United Catholic Music & Video Association and gave almost annual "Unity Awards" to various artists and producers of religious materials. In the first year that the awards were given, of the 46 categories of awards, nine were won by members of the Brown/Stein/Scallon families.
The company also runs HeartBeat Distribution now known as Catholic Distribution a distributor within the Catholic & Christian market. HeartBeat's video division has released "The Story of Knock", based on the Marian apparition in Knock, Ireland; "Contemplating Icons", which explains the symbolism and theological insight of icons within the Christian tradition, and "Lourdes, Pilgrimage & Healing", which echoes the biblical meaning of a pilgrimage and focuses on the messages that Mary gave to Bernadette at the Marian shrine of Lourdes. Their music publishing division, HeartBeat Music, is a vehicle for the label's Singer/Song writers and is building and developing a catalog for use in parishes, education and for recordings by artist.
In 2006, performer Dana Scallon and her husband Damien Scallon separated from Heart Beat Records to form the music production company DS Music Productions. Whereas, the owners of Heart Beat Records (the sister and brother-in-law of Dana Scallon) and the Scallons did not have a written agreement or contract regarding company shareholdings and copyright under U.S. law, the matter of ownership of master recordings performed by Dana while working with Heart Beat ended up in U.S. court between 2006 and 2011. The recordings made by Dana were ultimately removed from the Heartbeat Catalogue and turned over for distribution by DS Music.
